CLASSICAL VARIATION OF THE KING’S INDIAN DEFENSE
Once again the debate on who is who in the Kings Indian/Modern defense continue at the end of year open competition at the media center, Ohene Djan stadium ,Accra on December 27,2010.
Inform Eddie Nii Thompson crushed his opponents with ease and took away the winning prize. Thompson scored 5 out of 5.
The highlight of the competition was round 3 when he met Kojo Hasford.
With the white pieces in hand Thompson chose the queens pawn opening and Kojo replied with the modern defence thereby setting the stage for the best all rounder in this opening.
After 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 d6 3.Nf3 g6 4.Nc3 Bg7 5.e4 o-o 6.Be2 Nc6 7.o-o e5 8.d5 Ne7 9.b4 b6 10.a4 a5 11.ba5 Ra5 then Thompson played 12.Bd2 …. A novelty, often played is 12. Nd2 with the aim of occupying the b3 square and launching a queen side assault. The game continued 12……Ra8 13.Qc2 Nd7
14.a5 ba5 15.Nb5 f5 16.h3 fe4 17. Ng5 Nb6 18.Ba5 h6 (Thompson has succeeded in creating weaknesses around the black king, later to be exploited)

So the debate rages on ,Archie Varmah, a Liberian Champion resident in Ghana and Kojo Hasford took the second position with 3.5 points followed by veteran Billy Busumtwi,Ernesto Barro,Ammer Ali,Robert Sackey and Kwadwo Bonsu with 3 points each. Dr. Nkrumah was 9thwith 2.5 points and Micheal Ackam who has not played competitive chess for over a year had 2 points.
