GHANAIAN AWARDED CHESS INTERNATIONAL MASTER TITLE
Six time Ghana National Chess Champion, Francis Anquandah emerged winner of the Zone 4.4 Individual Chess Championships that took place at Yaounde, Cameroon from November 21 to 29 2014. He scored 7.5 out of the possible 9 to win the crown.
This has made not only him the first Ghanaian to be awarded with an International Master title but also gets him automatic qualification to participate in the African Individual Championship to be held in Namibia later in the year.
Amba Marius Claude Oyon from Cameroun also finished with 7.5 points but placed second after the tie-breaker. He also attained International mastership. Agbor John also from Cameroon came third and earned a FIDE Master title.
In the female category however, Rabiu olabisi from Nigeria was crowned the female champion as she obtained an impressive 5.5 points out of the possible 6. She was followed closely by the Ghanaian female national champion Angela Ayiku who has also been in good form throughout the year. Edoh Ama from Togo took third place in that category.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the tournament, the president of the Cameroon Chess Federation Colonel Michel Nguele Viang, said he was impressed with the performance and encouraged athletes to maintain the good standings so as to excel at the world championships.
