Thompson Records Perfect Score in Kumasi
The much awaited Kumasi Chess Classics came to an end last Saturday at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium with the purpose of unearthing chess talents and also popularizing the game in the Ashanti Region. The tournament was organized by the Ghana Chess Association and with sponsorship support from Group Captain George Arko-Dadzie, the GCA President.
The 7-round Swiss event was deservedly won by Mr. Edward Thompson as he went unbeaten with 7 points. He was followed closely by new Kumasi sensation, Bernard Anhwere of the KNUST Chess Club. His colleague, Stephen Ofori-Poku won the discovery of the tournament as he managed to get four points ahead of notable Kumasi based players including Kwame Sekyere, Marc Gardesey and Kwabena Adu-Poku.
According to the vice president GCA, Mr. Ameku, the Kumasi lads have hinted their preparedness ahead of the Team Chess Championships to be held from 19th September in Accra. He also acknowledged the support from CCML, a savings and loans company to sponsor the upcoming event.
