2021 NATIONAL CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP (Qualifiers)
The National Chess Championship, commonly referred to as Nationals in the chess community, is an annual chess tournament that sees the participation of the nation’s finest players. These players battle it out for the title of National champion as well as a spot on the National Men and Women’s Chess Teams. The defending champions for the tournament are IM Francis Anquandah and WCM Tobi Felix for Men’s and Women’s categories respectively.
As 2020 is an Olympiad year, the top 5 players in both the open and Women’s categories will qualify to constitute the Ghana National Chess Team (nicknamed The Golden Knights) hence the right to represent Ghana at the 45th World Chess Olympiad scheduled to take place in Russia next year.
Phase One (elimination stage) of the tournament will be a 9-round Swiss tournament that takes place from the 12th -14th November at the Media center of the Accra Sports Stadium.
The top 5 performers will qualify to play in the final phase where they come head to head with the already established players for both the men’s and women’s divisions.
