Accra is scheduled to be the host city for the 2021 African Youth Chess Championships which is scheduled to take place from the 17th to 26th September, 2021. The indoor board game competition will be held at the Best Western Plus Beach Hotel which has also partnered with the Ghana Chess Association to host the foreign players and dignitaries.

The week-long tournament has attracted more than 150 boys and girls from 14 African Countries who will lock horns in the 9 round Swiss tournament. The week-long tournament will be played in the following age categories; Under 8, Under 10, Under 12, Under 14, Under 16, and Under 18.

The Chief Arbiter is Bechir Messaoudi from Tunisia who will be ably supported by others including Ghana’s top Arbiter, Air Cmdre. Arko-Dadzie.

The Ghanaian Team

The Ghanaian team will be led by 9 year old Dave Chief Quansah Acheampong who is the current Under 9 African Champion. He is joined by a host of other national champions such as John Allotey, under 16 champion, Aarush Thakkar, Segunda Chess League winner as well as new talent Mawuli Richardson who was the winner of the Primera Chess League. In the girls category, Angel Quansah Jordan will lead the team with her experience in playing in the recent Youth World Cup held online together with Rebecca Barnor.

We will also be joined by the winners of the Prabon Greenfields Chess Tournament which took place in Kumasi last July. The winners are Maxwell Agyeman, Freda Bemah, Kelvin Mensah and Abena Danso.

According to the president of the Ghana Chess Association, Mr. Philip Ameku, arrangements are in place to see a successful tournament. He is also confident in the potential of the Ghanaian squad although he lamented the unavailability of u-18 champions Enock Kpodzi and Malav Daftari who cannot compete as they are preparing to write their final exams.
