THE LION’S LOUDEST ROAR
Lionel Adu’s impressive performances in recent times reached its peak when he won his first GCA individual open tournament. The 7-round Easter Chess Tournament came to an end on 11th April, 2015 at the Media Center of the Accra Sports Stadium and attracted 14 top players.
Lionel, who in 2011 led the western region to win gold at the National Unity Games and disappeared, seems to have resurfaced on the chess scene with splendid performances since the middle of last year. In July, he placed 2nd in the unrated section 4th President’s Cup, followed with an impressive 4th position at the National Individual Championships in November. He also formed part of the Senior National team select side that thrashed Togo 4-1 in the international friendly encounter in March this year and also represented Ghana at the recent Zonal Individual Championships.
He won this tournament with six points out of the possible seven beating top players including CM Edward Thompson and Evans Kpodo a former senior national team player, Sekou Nkrumah and the new young sensational player Ajavon Anthony.
Below is the final ranking table after 7 rounds.
