TWO GHANAIAN CHESS PLAYERS MAKE CANDIDATE MASTER TITLE AT WORLD CHESS OLYMPIAD
Ghana presented a team of 5 players for the 40th World Chess Olympiad that took place in Istanbul, Turkey, from 27th August to 10 September and for the first time in the history of the game in Ghana two of the players made the title of Candidate Master.
Playing among a strong field of grandmasters, international masters and World Federation masters the Ghanaian duo of Francis Anquandah and Edward Nii Lamptey Thompson brazed through the storm to make the candidate master title. This title is awarded non-titled players who make a minimum rating of 2200 or attain a fifty percent or better performance as at round 9 in a world rated tournament like the Olympiad.
In a related event, the President of the Ghana Chess Association, Wing Commander George Kweku Arko-Dadzie, was also awarded the title of Development Instructor after completing a course for trainers organised by the World Chess Federation.
Meanwhile, the World body has identified the low development of the game in our sub-region and has promised to shift its focus to assist chess associations in the region with training seminars and rated tournaments in the nearest future.
